Books, Books, Everyone Loves Books!

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

I know you what you’re thinking…another author blog…another book discussion…
And I do have some new covers and cool review quotes for you. We’ll get to them eventually. I’ll also tease you with the first of many photos from this year’s Romantic Times Conference (a running commentary I won’t run out of material for, for months, I assure you). And there’s lots of fun news to tell.

But I’m a tired girl, so we’ll have to take it slow ;o) Seriously, writing something like six books in 18 months is enough to wear out even the strongest of us. It’s easy to forget what’s important, if you’re not careful. Then I realized something Wednesday night–when I skidded home on two wheels from RT and landed in the midst of a NovelTalk chat. I LOVE readers, readers, readers…writing and selling my books is my living, but my stories are my connection with all of you. I cherish that, really.

And I don’t ever want to let that go. Ever. So, here’s a picture of a handsome guys to oggle, and a teaser for my designer purse and wallet boutique in Brenda Novak’s ‘08 Diabetes Research auction.

This weekend I’ll update everyone on the purse prizes I’m waaaaay overdue sending to their rightful blog buddie owners. I’ll get covers and reviews (really, really good ones) up on the blog and website, and we’ll take it from there…while I take a few weeks off from the writing grind.

Did I mention romance cover model king John DeSalvo was at this year’s RT? A very, um…friendly guy. Yeah, friendly, that’s what it felt like to hug on him for a while… ;o)

And here’s a designer Isabella Fiore purse you can bid on at http://brendanovak.auctionanything.com/ .

Of course, I’ll have some fun things to give away out here, to celebrate my April (Mothers of the Year) and June (To Protect the Child) releases!

More on that tomorrow ;o)

Beautiful New Jersey

Sunday, October 7th, 2007

Typing away in the airport on my way home from a FABULOUS New Jersey RWA conference. It’s warmer here than in Georgia right now…actually, it’s freaking H-O-T. Take a look at my one and only picture from the weekend, and you’ll agree, things are just about perfect in this lovely place ;o)

Yep, that’s Bill Freeda, a romace cover model friend who showed for the book signing–a native Jersey boy who’s always fun to see. I’m the tired lady standing beside him wearing no makeup because I’m working on my second conference in as many weeks. Bill, of course, is fresh as a daisy and lovely enough to hug that I remembered to pull out my camera and have a friend record the moment for my blog buddies! He’ll be at RT again next year, and I hear tell there will even be a Romance Cover Model reunion…sigh…

I’m thrilled to report that Because of Boy once again sold like hotcakes. Romantic suspense seems to be a very good twist for my new Superromance venture. Can’t wait to hear from readers as they get a chance to dive in. Harriette Klausner (a top online reviewer) has weighed in–and she likies:

“… BECAUSE OF A BOY is a fabulous look at health care for the homeless and for illegal immigrants as much as a contemporary romance. The story line is action-packed from the first encounter in the hospital between the lead couple and never slows down until the final altercation. Yet with all the non-stop action and the romantic subplot, Anne DeStefano provides a strong exposé on the lack of any health care for the homeless and limited at best for illegal immigrants (Hippocrates must be turning in his grave with some of the Draconian solutions to outlaw help).: –Hariette Klausner reviews

Wow–I LOVE writing about up-to-date topics and touch hearts and give you guys romance to gush over, all at the same time. And I promise, Remember Me, Atlanta Heroes book two, is just as exciting a romance. I’ll give you a sneak peak during the blog release party, promise ;o)

But, more of Because of a Boy today… Thanks for letting me know you’re enjoying it ;o) Here’s more of Stephen Creighton–some of the last little bit of character setup before we run full speed into the action. Some of you will find Stephen and his boss Neal and theil legal aid center familiar–Neal was the hero of my award-winning The Prodigal’s Return, and Stephen had a few cameo scenes in that book (too few…so I have him his own kick-ass story, lol!). It was a lot of fun to catch up with Neal and Jen ;o):

“No word yet from the hospital?” Neal Cain asked from the doorway of Stephen’s office.
The man’s dangerous edge wasn’t softened by the well-cut suits and crisply-ironed shirts he always wore to the office. Stephen’s boss, the founder of the meekly-named Atlanta Legal Aid Center had done five years of hard time–entering the adult penal system as a seventeen-year-old–for a manslaughter conviction he copped to, because he’d felt responsible for his best friend’s accidental death.
His choice had robbed Neal of the last of his childhood, and eight years with the people he’d left behind in the small southern town he’d grown up in. But the traumatic experience had sparked his passion for protecting vulnerable defendants from an often too-rigid legal system that had neither the time nor the resources to make sure everyone received the highest quality defense possible. Neal’s mission since his early parole had been making sure the innocents he defended were safe from the horrors he’d survived.
As soon as Stephen had briefed him on the Digarro situation, Neal had asked to meet the distraught father, then green-lighted the case. Whatever time Stephen needed to spend on it. Nothing beat Neal’s instincts with people, and his gut had told him the same thing as Stephen’s–Digarro was hiding something, but he wasn’t responsible for Dillon’s injuries.
“Nothing official yet from the hospital.” Stephen pushed back from the desk. He rubbed the back of his neck, massaging the knots that refused to completely untie themselves at the end of each day. “I got in to see the kid for a few minutes. He’s pretty banged up. I can understand the hospital’s concern.”
“You starting to doubt the father?” Neal gave up his relaxed pose lounging against the door jamb, and stepped into the shadows of Stephen’s office. It was hours past sunset. Only a desk lamp held back the darkness as Stephen replayed every fact he knew about the case, what he’d seen with his own eyes, and Kate Rhodes’ certainty that Manny Digarro was a threat to his own child.
“No,” he finally said. “No way is Manny responsible for his son’s medical condition.”
“But you don’t believe his whole story.” Neal sat. He was wicked smart and ruthless, responsible for the bulk of their behind the scenes work, since convicted felons technically couldn’t practice law. He was a silent weapon, writing briefs and negotiating deals long before cases got to trial. Still, he read people better and faster than anyone Stephen had ever met, and he hadn’t been wrong about a client yet.
“Digarro never touched his son.” Stephen was sure of it. “But that green card he showed us…”
“Yeah,” Neal agreed, “it’s a forgery.”
And now the Digarro kid was in the system, and the police were focused on the father, while the hospital ran their tests.
“How long do you think we’ve got?” Stephen asked.
“Before INS comes looking to join the discussion?”
“Before Digarro disappears from Atlanta for good.” There had been a lot of fear in the man the last time Stephen had spoken with him.
Illegal or not, Manny Digarro was fighting to make a new start in this country for his son. Stephen would welcome the chance to help make it a legal one. There were ways to hold off the INS, until the right visas could be obtained. Loopholes to wrangle, giving the Digarros time to apply for legitimate immigration status, and then citizenship.
But deportation was the likeliest outcome, if INS got involved before Stephen was ready to negotiate. Dillon couldn’t travel in his condition, but his abusive father might find himself on the next bus back over the border, then turned over to Colombian authorities to deal with. Manny had to know the danger he was in. He was nowhere to be found, at least not at the last shelter he and his son had stayed at. Digarro had disappeared as soon as he’d given Stephen that gift to take to Dillon–along with a father’s promise that he would be back for his son, no matter how long they were separated.
“Manny’s next move depends on what we hear from the hospital,” Stephen reasoned. “If we’re lucky, he’ll wait long enough to be cleared of the abuse charges. But we won’t have the test results for several days. At least that’s what the nurses answering the phone on the pediatric floor are saying.”
A rotating shift of nurses that so far hadn’t included the willful, heart-wrenchingly protective Kate Rhodes.
“And if he’s not cleared of the charges?” For Neal, cold, hard reality was the only way to do business. “If immigrations status is an issue, the Digarros are headed for a courtroom either way. You’ll work your magic, we’ll take our chances, but this one may not be winnable.”
Stephen was Neal’s top litigator–a pedigreed, trust-fund baby no one had seen coming.

Underestimating him rarely happened anymore. He was too determined to help the under-privileged with the same passion as his boss. When he lost, he lost innocent lives to an unforgiving system, and he wasn’t losing Dillon Digarro’s father.
“We’ll make it work,” he said. “We’ve still got some time. If we don’t hear anything by morning, I’ll–”
“How many other cases do you have pending?” Neal asked.
He knew how many, of course. He knew what was written on every scrap of paper that circulated the office.
“No more than usual.” Stephen shrugged.
“So, you’re backed up two weeks out?”
The center’s everyday caseload would have left the average lawyer drowning beneath mounds of briefs and pending motions, not to mention court appearances that ate entire days at a time.
“I’ll handle it.” Stephen always did.
“I know. You eat, sleep and breathe this job, the same as I used to,” Neal conceded. He still beat even Stephen into the office most mornings, and was slaving away most evenings after Stephen headed home. “But if you’re going to hunker down with the Digarro’s, consider handing some of the everyday details over to the rest of the team. Let Kelly do your research. Give the junior associates a crack at some of your open cases.”
“Yeah, sure,” Stephen agreed as Neal stood and headed toward the deserted outer office.
Except Stephen didn’t do teams, and they both knew it. Just like he never got sucked too far into a case or let relationships with clients get personal. He stayed in control. He got the job done as quickly and efficiently as possible, and then he moved on.
So why couldn’t he get the Digarro’s off his mind? And why had confronting one feisty nurse thrown him so badly that morning?
Kate Rhodes’ mixture of strength and vulnerability had been a surprise. Her genuine concern for her young patient had been too genuine for an impartial medical professional. That was her tell. Stephen’s way to convince her to fork over Dillon’s test results before the hospital got around to doing it, so he could handle things for Manny and move on.
So why was the idea of playing the woman to get what he needed for his client, the way he’d played countless contacts in the past, suddenly so distasteful?

Trickling in for an update…

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

Life trickles on around us sometimes. So much, coming in little bursts and gusts, while we keep busy with the things that keep us from noticing. Here’s a taste of what’s swirling around me of late:

We’re well into Summer vacation here in Georgia. Our kids get out a full month before they do up north. So I’m enjoying having my son home, and trying to work around him.

I’m leaving again on Friday for the Wisconsin RWA conference in Green Bay. They’ve invited me to come up to give two workshops. Meanwhile I still have pictures from from my last trip–The Heart of Dixie’s reader luncheon–that I haven’t even posted yet.

I’m writing strong on my Mother’s Day novella. Can’t wait to share some of it with you. Feel up for a bit of a teaser???

My agent has the first three chapters of the paranormal thriller I’ve been chatting about on and off for a while. Here’s hoping she loves it enough to want to try and market it.

Oh, and Book 2 of Atlanta Heroes is due mid-August, so I’m starting to work it into my daily rotation, too…

Good times ;o) Pant…pant…

Also on my agenda is taking pics of the RT promo goodies I brought back with me, so I can begin giving them away. Look for those coming soon. Also, don’t miss the last day of Brenda Novak’s online auction…and not just for my Coach goodies. There’s so much out there to bid on, and it’s a great cause. Here’s the link:

http://brendanovak.auctionanything.com/Home.taf

And when that’s done, remember to leave a comment here through July for your chance to win the Coach purse that’s my latest prize in my website giveaway.

So, gonna be gone over the weekend and likely not posting. Guess I should leave you with something fun to look at. Pictures keep trickling in, too. Here’s another of me posing during the RT Mister Romance Competition…With Travis Greiman…compliments of the Romantic Times website… Sigh… Sometimes, a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do…

RT Memories 4: Live in the Moment

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007

I’ve said it before. We only have control over the moment we’re living now. You might as well give it all you’ve got, ’cause the rest of your life isn’t yours to spin.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a champ at looking back (at the good stuff and the bad).

Like, I’m just now getting the rest of April’s prizes in the mail, because I’m a neurotic mommy watching her nestling leave Elementary School behind, and therefore I’ve been scrambling for every last memory I can get these last few weeks.

And like the new RT pictures I have to share below–that kind of looking back does a girls frazzled mind some good, don’t you think ;o)
Looking back or trying to predict the future is normal. Human. Essential to understand your place. But don’t get lost in the looking. Get lost in the living, instead.

What’s coming, what’s not gone right –what’s scared us so badly it’s still lingering, no matter how much time has past–or even what’s so right we’d kill to live it over and over again…none of it’s your reality right now. None of it’s that juicy moment right in front of you, waiting for you to take a bite to see how it’ll taste. Right now is the good stuff. Right now’s where your passion should be.
So, my apologies for the delay in your goody deliveries. The last packages go out today (except to those winners who’re too shy to share their addies with me, and you know who you are–if you don’t, look back over the last month’s posts and find your name and get in touch ;o).

And here are some great pics to help smooth over my slow, slow blog posting of late. I’m getting back on the horse. Don’t have a choice, really. There’s a lot of work due, NOW!!! Gotta be who I am now, instead of who all those memories tell me I might be…you do the same, then tell us what you’ve acomplished today ;o)

Okay, I LOVE this picture of me and Jason Santigo–Mr. Romance ‘07. Ride ‘em, cowgirl!!!
And here are more of the CrossingRealms guys…Bill Freda joined in the fun this time. Lucky us ;o)
And as for Chris Winters, for those of you who haven’t made it out to Rose and Anthony’s site yet, here’s the banner everyone’s been drooling over!

May…and RT Memroies 3!

Tuesday, May 15th, 2007

Before we get to more of the great pictures folks are loving, here’s a piece of my president’s column for the May GRW newsletter, The Galley. Oh!, and I don’t know what’s with blogger these days, but please leave comments annonymously and just include your name in the body of the comment–argh!!!

May

May you know your whole heart, and have the courage to invite us closer to marvel at all that is are uniquely you.

May you discover the grandeur to be treasured in simplicity, and that it is the simplest parts of you that are most divine.

May fear of tomorrow never hold more sway than the promise of what one moment can mean today.

May you see and understand and listen and support far more than you judge.

May nature be your muse every time the wind caresses your face.

May you find friends at every turning point in life, and may you find yourself to be the finest company of all.

May you write because life seems empty without it, and may you live at least one of your fantasies this year.

And may you never forget that the most magical thing to have isn’t what you want most, but peace with what you already possess ;o)

Enjoy the beautiful spring outside your windows, my friends. May is our proof, after winter’s harshest days have held us captive, that life always renews itself.

Now…a few more pics from RT!!!

First, Brian Schell, Steven Rossi and Chris Winters…some of the guys in the amazing Crossing Realms calendar…and, yes, they’re more amazing in person ;o)

And me posing with Travis during the contest…it was quite a hardship–Not!!! This one was taken on my digital camera, so the light’s not great, but I think you’ll get the idea.

RT Memories 2: Letting the world flow around you…

Saturday, May 12th, 2007

Great advice someone once gave me…

Life just is, and resisting what is makes about as much sense as hiding from the invisible ghost in your closet. We do it as kids, because we still believe that “it’s not there if I dont’ see it.” But as adults, really, what’s the chance the world’s going anywhere every time we blink?

So, I’ve been letting the good and the bad flow around me this week. Interesting excercise. I’m more a dive in and conquer kind fo girl, but sometimes there’s nothing to do but let everything flow around you and refuse to be afraid. Good, bad, life just is. Nothing to do but ride it out.

Lot’s going on here. Most of it good. Lots going on online, too, and here’s my little contribution…
The list of the release party winners I don’t have addresses for. I want to make sure I can start shipping prizes out starting Monday (starting with the last two “froggies” I gave away on April 9th). Everyone who hasn’t, please send me your mailing address:

Our April 18th winner “Anne,” Anne, who posted at 5:26 pm, the Golf Girl makeup case and bath goodies–still need an adress

April 20th winners Sandra M. (green Coach wristlette) and Belinda (Yoga Girl makeup case), I need both your addresses. Not sure if Sandra M. is Sandra Martin…want to be sure ;o)

And for everyone, here are some more great RT Houston pictures. I’m still waiting for more from the show, but there’s lot of lovely men to go around, regardless!!

Here are Jason and Brookes, all dressed up and ready to party before one of the evening events. Yowza!!

Me and another of the Mr. Romance contestants, Chris Winters. A great guy, and don’t miss his banner photo at the top of Rose and Anthony’s website:

http://www.myspace.com/a_n_r_photography

One of my Club RT ‘05 winners from St. Louis was carrying around her cool bag still, so I snapped her picture…

And here I am before the Fairy Ball with another Chris, who was the youngest (and most mischevious) of the Mr. Romance contestents.

More soon. Have a great weekend, everyone.

And remember, let life flow…it’s a funner ride that way!!!

RT 2007 Memories 1: Simple Blessings that ROCK!!!

Wednesday, May 9th, 2007

Yeah, it’s been a rough couple of weeks around here…thanks for all your support. We’re rocking along okay now. And, guess what! When I stop to think about all the unexpected good stuff that surprises you (online friends included ;o) in the midst of the unexpected bad, rough just doesn’t seem quite as scary, does it?

Like–my son’s graduating from elementary school next week. I’m so proud and in awe of how far he’s come. Mom moments are striking lightening fast every day now. Didn’t expect to be so caught up in this mini right of passage. But here I am wanting to memorize every second and store them away for when he’s grown and gone and off making someone else’s world better just by being a part of it.

Check back tomorrow for a list of all the prizes I owe everyone–I’ll let you know who I have addresses for and who I still need to hear from. Once I have everything in the mail, I’ll start doing weekly give aways of the oodles of goodies I brought back from RT–starting next week, I hope.

And speaking of simple blessings and RT, it wasn an AMAZING week, and a hard one, since I was so far away from my mom when she got sick. But my husband was here to look after my family, and there were some simple blessings in store for me to make sure I stayed grounded in the moment in Houston. One of the best things about the Romantic Times conference is getting to know the folks who come year after year–fellow writers, RT staff, fans, and of course the models who are the stars of the week.

Here’s a pic of me with fellow authors Arianna Heart (Cat Cody) and Patrice Michelle at the Ellora’s Cave Moulin Rouge party. Dressed up and ready to dance and have a great time!

And another with model and great guy Steve Rossi, who’s on the cover of the Crossing Realms calendar this year (http://crossingrealmsllc.com/). We were smooshed together for a group photo, taken by the very talented photographer Rose Germano, or her equally talented husband Anthony…not sure which…I was distracted). It was a hardship, but I managed to “hang in there” and be a joiner ;o)

More hunky guy photos, you say!!! Here’s one of my favorites from the week–Brooks Johnson, who’s spotlighted in this years Ellora’s Cave calendar (which I’ll be giving away a signed copy of later in the month ;o). Brooks is on the right, signing calendars with buddy EC model Lorenzo. Nice guys shouldn’t be this beautiful…it’s just not good for a woman’s blood preassure!

One final group shot, until I get to my big suprise (if I didn’t string you along, you wouldn’t believe I was back to full writing strength ;o) Another shot from the first night’s party–the girls again, grouped around EC model Devin…the medical student and exotic dancer (killer combination). These are really the greatest, most interesting people. So much fun to catch up with each year at the events!!!

Okay, the simple blessings part of the week-long RT experience–at least one of them.

Because I know so many of the staff and regulars, and because one of the female models that pose with the Mr. Romance conetestants in the model competition that concludes the conference each year couldn’t be there, and I guess because I have big, too-much-like-romance covermodel-hair, I was asked to pose up on stage with the Mr. Romance contestants this year!!!!!

Fun, fun, fun…great fun and I got to do something I never thought I had in me (getting up on stage to do anything more than teach sooooo isn’t me, despite the hair, for those of you who are just getting to know me). And the perks–spending time with great guys and getting to live out all those fantasy romance poses and cover clutches…sigh…I’ll be back next post to tell you more.

Until then, here’s one of the pictures that are slowly trickling in from the show–this is during the Western Pose portion of the contest, and I’m working with Jason Santiago–2007’s Mr. Romance winner!!!

Photo once again compliments of Rose and Anthony, of A&RPhotography. Check out their MySpace page. Buy a callendar. You won’t be disappointed.(http://www.myspace.com/a_n_r_photography).

Yes, it was like a dream. A three-hour-long, hero-filled dream ;o)

Come back to hear more!!! Like how GQ covered the event, including the rehersals and the behind the scenes stuff…oh my gosh!!!

A Few Good Men!!!

Thursday, July 6th, 2006

When you’re married to an Italian, it’s pretty obvious what kind of heros float your boat. The perfect Italian heartthrob is larger than life, loud and proud, with a big heart to match a big life that’s filled with color and passion. My ulitmate never tiptoes through a room. He never cares who’s watching. Watch out, here he comes!!

Anyone keeping up with the Wold Cup this year? There’s a whole team of lovely Italian gods heading for the final round. I’ve been glued to the TV watching for weeks, drooling!!!

Let me show you what I mean.

Take a moment to appreciate Team Italy superstar Fabio Cannavaro.

A man’s got something good going when he can make a girl wish she was a lowly bottle of water. Drink me down baby…let me hang from that noble chin.

And what woman doesn’t go mushy over a warrior-to-die for who’s also a hands-on dad, whose life revolves around his family. BTW, while you’re all “oh, isn’t that cute…” take a look at the freakin’ muscles in Fabio’s thighs… Yes, I have a soccer player fettish. Can you blame me!!!

And just so we understand each other, let’s appreciate one final picture of my ultimate sports hero. It’s worth coming back to look at again, if you find yourself with some free time today.

Wouldn’t you agree? If a man looks like this…win or lose, he’s tops on the list!!

Your turn.

What’s you’re idea of the ultimate hero? Sweet guy… or tough and ready to rumble?

Today’s BTW: My bookclub is up and running on eHarlequin. If you already have The Prodigal’s Return, jump on over and give us something to talk about. If your copy hasn’t arrived yet, whining is also acceptable ;O)

The Betty Dreams of an Ordinary Girl

Thursday, June 22nd, 2006

Angelina Jolie…don’t care what you think about her politics or her crazy past, but you’ve got to give the woman credit. She knows how to park her perky buns on the front page and keep them there (even is she has to steal another woman’s husband to keep her hooks in the “don’t you want to be me” tabloids).

Anyway, I digress…oh, right, anyone who seizes her most fabulous self and refuses to let go like Angie has, impresses the hell out of me!!!! She’s been having the most fabulous day ever for so long, I suspect she keeps a groundhog chained in her halogen-lit, sans-shadow basement.

She’s the golden girl, and I dig a brunette who can pull off the glittery gold thing. She’s glamorous Betty to the rest of our Wilmas. Cosmetically altered to the point that her dewy glow has been preserved to perfection (intact, even, just days after a C-section, we’re now told), while us mere mortals are left to age about as gracefully as a peeled apple left out in the sun. Okay, not that quickly, but everything’s relative, and have you seen Ms. Brangelina lately??? We’re so not Betty-worthy…

And, oh yeah. This guy she’s hanging out with? He’s more perfect than she is… Okay, we kinda have to hate her for that, but he’s kind of screwed his ex to be with Ms. A, so how fab. could he really be?

Digressing again…

My point is, wouldn’t it be nice to be a Betty for a day??? My theory is we all have our Betty moments, we’re just not always paying attention… Say, like when your’e dancing with a girl friend at a reader convention full of, say, perfect-looking men…and one of the models who’s a good friend of hers sidles up to dance with your group…and someone wants to take a picture (’cause everyone’s always taking his pickie)… and that someone says, how ’bout a kiss???

LOL!! A friend sent me this picture from another friend’s site (thanks, Dana)… I’m not Angelina, but it was a pretty hot dress, and Bill Freda is not only a fun man to dance with but a FREAKIN’ HOTTIE!!! Sure said girlfriend and I went back to our real lives where we’re busy writers and wives and mothers (so Wilma sometimes, it’s easy to lose who you are in the midst), but for just a moment, we got to be Betties!!!

Don’t forget to celebrate your Bettiness, ladies (and for my gentleman visitors, your Bradness, without the whole being a bastard to your wife part) ;O). When you’re drowning in every day, you can’t always see the montaintop. It’s good to have a momento to remind you (this picture’s going in my scrap book for sure). And Betty inspiration is good for all kinds of practical applications beyond boosting the ego. My husband thinks my dress is hot, too. He’s taking me out to dinner so he can have it (that is, me) to himself all night ;O)

Have you ever had a “Dancing with Bill Freda” sighting, a Betty moment, or otherwise have stumbled across your most fabulous Angie self when you least expected it???
