Shoes Are My Heroin: Seasonal Insanity…

Monday, January 30th, 2012

Lots of Facebook chatter lately about shoes you need and those you lust for. I’ve scored both in the last few weeks. Neither are completely practical. But what’s the fun in practical? They fit like a dream and will feel great on my feet for hours. And there were bought at killer sale prices. PERFECT! Whatcha think?

These are my early-spring, neutral, sensible business pumps.

Okay, they’re wedges, too, and will look great with summer pants and cotton skirts and even shorts. But also the trousers and spring dresses/suits I’ll wear when I teach. No, really, that’s why I bought them. That, and they have rounded toes (thank Dog, the pointy ones are out again)…

And since this time of year’s all about transition, I also needed something not-so-black to mix with the lighter things we wear under our coats in the south the next few months, (more…)

Shoes Are My Heroin: DFWCon D-Day!!!

Friday, February 25th, 2011

There’s been some trash talking here about the DFWConnference ShoeCam Grudge-match. You know who (yes, you, Jenni, so don’t even think you can hide) has asked her blog faithful to tell her which shoes will grind my lovelies into the dust and win her the glory. It’s only fair that I beg for your advice in turn.

Don’t leave me unprepared.I’m packed (overpacked, actually), but which shoes should I wear? There are a couple of business-y but not too conservative dresses/dress suits in my bag, a skirt with a two different silk blouses that match, and jeans/leggings to wear with funky T-shirts or a tunics. And we’ll be in Dallas Fort Worth, so no need to worry about dressing for warmth.

So tell me, SAMH readers–Which of these should I wear to smack Jenni down for the grudge-match count???

fri brown nanette

The dresses are blue/blueish gray, so naturally I’m thinking of wearing this cool brown Nanette Lepores.

Or, my black platform Cole Haan Mary Janes. These have Niki air soles, believe it or not. Definitely conference wearable, regardless of the heel. (more…)

Shoes Are My Heroine: Preparing For The Grudgematch!

Saturday, February 19th, 2011

Next week, I’ll be speaking at the DFWcon near Dallas, and Jenni and I are already holding our shoe grudgematch on Twitter. To sum up, here’s this week’s throwdown from my camp ;o) Come on…who do you love more???

Shoes Are My Heroin: DFWCon Shoe Cam. Be there!

Friday, February 11th, 2011

On the lighter side of things, Jenni and I are, as it turns out, both teaching at the same conference later this month. The Dallas Fort Worth Writers Con. And, as it turns out, we’re both shoe addicts. So on Twitter yesterday, of course I committed us to doing a DFWcon Shoe Cam ;o) In addition to tweeting all the great craft and industry news from the event, we’ll be flashing pics of the hottest footwear we can find!

It’s not my fault. She practically dared me into it with this taunting pic of her newest purchase  for the con–

jenni's shoe

In response to which any self-respecting shoe addict (like me) would be compelled to raise the stakes by promising to pack my leopard print Stuart Weitzmans:

And just in case I need something a little less “let’s party!” there are my python pumps. Well, they’re sort of pumps:

Who will win the throw down? Who will snap the most excellent shot of conference attendee footwear? You be the judge. Follow us on Twitter at DFWCon Feb. 26-27.

Yes, there will be craft and publishing tweets, too. We’re planning to blog about the publishing/writing side of things. But you don’t want to miss the shoes, right? A Twitter shoe grudge match. What’s not to love about that ;o)

Follow Jenni (@JenniHolbrook) and me (@AnnaDeStefano) deeper into our addiction that week, and decide for yourself who’s gams rock the loudest. As long as you have fun with our insanity (and pick me in the end) the more the merrier!

I Hear the Craziest Things/Shoes Are My Heroin Double Feature

Friday, February 4th, 2011

Here’s how the craziest conversation I’ve had in a long time went yesterday–

[Indifferent, Frustrated, Redneck Woman] Where did I hit your car?

[Still Shaking Me] Right there (We’re still in our cars, she’s tried to drive away and I’ve tracked her through the parking lot).

[IFRW] That? It’s nothing. I barely tapped you.

[SSM] The wheel and back panel are a mess. You may have messed up my suspension. I need to see your insurance information.

[IFRR] Don’t try to play me lady. I’ll buy you a new wheel. No sense involving insurance. I’ll give you twenty dollars. (Digs in her purse).

[SSM] (Laughing, realizing it pisses her off when her cigarette falls out of her mouth her head spins back toward me so fast) You need to pull over. I’m calling the police so we have a report.

[IFRW] The Police. Lady I got no time for that. I’m leaving… (Sees me taking a digital photo of her license plate with my phone and whips into a parking spot across the lot for me, begins waving something out her window). Here it is, b*$#h! Here’s your insurance. (more…)

Gone fishin’

Saturday, January 29th, 2011

Days like today weren’t  meant for deep introspection. They’re meant to sit in a boat and stare at water with your best friend while you pretend to be catch dinner.

Gone Finshing

I FaceBooked my wee hours of the morning, breakfast-making drama–shudder. Then after I watched my son’s 8:30 a.m. tennis match, we proceeded to cram so much into the schedule by early afternoon, the best I could do after that was FaceBook the awesome shoes I wore for the rest of the day, even doing dinner dinner dishes, to give me a little (well, big) boost.

shoes

Dinner, BTW, comprised of sliced fresh pears and AMAZING fresh white cheddar for my husband and me, and pizza for the teenager. That should tell anyone who knows how much I love to cook how exhausted we are around here. So, I’ll be doing my version of goin’ fishing for the rest of the evening–taking in a home movie (most likely Salt) and a glass of wine with my husband/best friend.

‘Til then, hang with your buds and wear amazing shoes yourself ;o)

Live it up for me!

Shoes Are My Heroin: Name That Designer!

Saturday, January 22nd, 2011

More booties to drool over. Manolo Blahnik, Valentino, and Stuart Weitzman. But everyone’s being shy today, even though some of their names are so flamboyant you’d think they’d be flaunting their designer lables in neon. So this post will be a riddle–you tell me which designer goes with which shoe. The winner receives a book of their choice from my backlist!

I’ll give you the names of the shoes themselves and as much description as I can without giving anything away, then you’re on your own. Leave your guess in the comments. I’ll pick a winner after a few days and I’m sure everyone who wants to play has had their chance. I’ll choose randomly from those who link each shoe with the right designer. Good luck!

These are for day, and maybe not technically booties. They work for night, too, with the right skirt. But mostly I like to wear them with colored or black opaque tights and fun jeans when I’m meeting girlfriends for lunch. Don’t think they’re comfortable enough for day walking? Everyone’s a critic. The name will slay you: Ghillie ;o) The box describes them as mink pearl kid leather platforms…who’s their daddy?

In honor of the white and black swan (just saw the Black Swan and LOVED it), I give you two of my favorite winter booties!

For day:

Tulips in January

Friday, January 7th, 2011

You have no idea the grief I’ve taken for not posting shoes since August. And I had no idea how much footwear was other people’s addiction, just like mine. More than the dream posts. More than the teenager and writing posts. More than the monthly contests (which I need to post winners for this weekend ;o). People WANT MORE SHOES!

So, in the spirit of there supposedly being more snow coming to north Georgia weekend (and the white Christmas we had for the first time in a century), I give you Tullips in January!

Prada Tullips

Some of our darlings are works of art. We can’t help but love them a little bit more, can we? Even if it means jealousy and discord in the closet, some of our shoe boxes (You keep all your shoes in their boxes, too, right? To protect them from dust and creasing and so forth. Especially suede ones like these. I know you do. Don’t make me come to your house and do an intervention!)…

Where was I? Oh, yeah. Some of our boxes hold gems that from the moment we first bring them home, we know we’ll cherish above all the rest.

My Prada pink suede strappy sandals are my babies. (more…)

Shoes Are My Heroine: Girly Attitude

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

Okay, the “day” shoes are starting to revolt. They’re wanting their time in the sun. And, really, it’s kind of sad. Like because I started by playing with Prada and the Valentino, everyone’s not going to get their love in due time. I think someone needs to work on their self-esteem, but I won’t point any fingers (You. Yes, you, over there, in the box whose top keeps flipping off and tripping me every time I go into the closet, because your picture hasn’t made it up on the blog yet. Are you really that neurotic???)

Okay. I AM pointing fingers–at my Nanette Lepore slingbacks. I walked all over Thirllerfest in these this year . I wore them with a nautical-themed, navy shift dress from the same designer that was just the right choice for a 12-hour day in the public eye–it worked even better for the banquet dinner, actually, than it did for breakfast that morning. In other words, I can’t afford to have one of my favorite conference mainstays revolt because it thinks I like the party shoes better…

So, I give you the perfect “Day” shoe.

white nanette lepore

Cute is an inadequate word, even if they can turn mean-spirited when they sense your eye has strayed to something shinier. I mean, look a them. They look like they were carved from clouds. I couldn’t help but buy them the first time I saw them, even though you know sling backs typically don’t work for me. Particularly slingbacks made of patent leather (something about the finish of most PLs starts to irritate my sensitive little, or not so little, feet within half an hour).

But I guess if you have scalloped, doily edges (and, well, if you’re perfectly lined like NPs always are), you can’t NOT wear like a dream, no matter your leather’s finish. And can we say, ”ADORABLE buttons.” Who designs casual heels with buttons for grown women??? It shouldn’t be legal to look lacy, have little girl buttons and three-inch heels that couldn’t be uncomfortable no matter how many flights of conference hotel stairs or endless corridors you walk, AND have a magically comfortable open toe. But my perfect day shoes have it all.

Bow to the power of the slingbacks, you sparkly party heels!

There–let’s hope balance is restored in the closet. At least for now.

Come back tomorrow, because it’s been strontly advised that I take the blog on a fieldtrip to the “flip side,” or my walking-about-the-city-in-the-summer casual shoes are going to start picketing ;o)
