Shoes Are My Heroine: Flower Girl

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

I don’t wear florals. Much.

Oh, I buy them. I’ve lived in the south all my life, so I’m surrounded by women (sometimes even men) wearing clothes covered in flowers, and some days I can’t resist the urge to join maddening crowd. I walk amidst the flowers themselves 10 months out of every year. But with very few exceptions, anything ”flower girl” that I buy ends up languishing in my closet, forlorn and marginalized and scoffed at by the more contemporary things that my creative mind gravitates toward when it’s time to stumble into my clothes.

Today’s update to the shoe project, however, is one of these exceptions.

Maybe it’s because they’re Valentino. Hand-made and hand-embroidered… (more…)

Revising a Year: Six Months ’til Christmas???

Friday, June 25th, 2010

Christmas in July is a fan-favorite summer promotion run over on the Fresh Fiction site (look for a contest and other cool goodies over there from me next month). Who doesn’t love the idea of enjoying a burst of winter chill after a long day crisping away in temps that can only be described as sweltering (at least here in the deep south)? But then you have to stop, scratch your head and ponder… Wait–that means Christmas is only six months away.

Only six more months in my self-declared year of revision? The first half of ‘10 pretty much finished off whatever energy reserves I carried over from ‘09. I’m rebounding nicely, though, and have enjoyed an infusion of creativity the last week or so while I sort and sift and pick and choose what my focus will be moving forward. That’s the key to revising your year (and your life) the way I’m attempting–finally zeroing your expectations out, finally meeting every commitment you’ve made, then sitting back and making intentional decisions about where your energies are best spent going forward. Things My Teenager Says: Lasagna at Midnight

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

“I can’t keep buying dinner every night after work.” My teenager’s just discovered the universal paradigm of gross revenue-expenses=net earnings.

Friends of ours (who feel more like family after all these years) have owned a favorite five-star italian restaurant in town for over 25 years. And they’ve given our teen an amazing opportunity to train as a busboy. “And I don’t have time to eat while I’m there.”

“You eat before you go. I just made you tacos.” I know what he wants. But our family’s working on actually ASKING for what you need, instead of passively suggesting it and waiting for someone else to ‘get it.’

“Mommmmmm.” I mentioned the teenage-boy groaning last post. Get used to it here at “Things My Teenager Says.”  Think of it as part of the soundtrack for this series. “I’m there for eight hours.”

“And they deprive you of nutrition the whole time! No snack time? No juice and cookies? We could call OSHA and report a workplace violation.” (more…)

Dream Theories: Dreaming Your Memories…

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

I’m talking dream theories straight through the fall, while we count down to the Halloween release of Secret Legacy(Nov., from Dorchester Leisure). This has been one of my most popular categories to date, so come back and join in the fun.

dream memories

There’s so much to explore this time. Dark Legacy’s sequel is about running to your dreams and what they’re revealing, instead of away. Even I was surprised at how much fantasy wove itself into my new paranormal thriller. A key bit of research that inspired Secret Legacy was discovering that many scientists believe our dreams are based, at least in symbol, on our pasts. That the structure of our dreamscapes is the structure of the memories we’ve already lived, either projected into fantasy that helps us resolve lingering issues or into the future that some suspect dreams can predict.

Scientific articles abound, full of useful information about this and other dream characteristics. Thank dog for my “other-life” identity is a tech writer. I’ve ghosted for everything from lawyers to epidemiologists. There’s a goldmine of research material on the Internet. Articles like this one: (more…)

Waterfall Challenge: Panther Falls

Monday, June 21st, 2010

I grew up surrounded by water: the inter-coastal waterway (marshes) in my back yard, the Savanna River off to the left and the Atlantic Ocean a little further away and to the south, close enough that shore birds flew over my neighborhood every day. But in my adult life, I’m more often than not landlocked. Which leaves me migrating to water every chance I get now. I’m not picky, except that natural water sources enchant me more than man-made lakes ever could. When my creativity or simply my peace of mind needs a “hit,” I’m looking for water that flows, that I can walk into and touch; water that I can hear and close my eyes and still see; water that will come back to me in my dreams when I’m home and too far away again.

If you’re an artist, you know what I mean. You have a touchstone, too. Something you need to be healthy and inspired and free. If you’re a reader, you’re the same, too. That need is what draws you back time and again to certain stories. Certain authors. Certain themes.

Water is a common theme in my books. All kinds of water. Even when I write about dreams, there’s water symbolism everywhere–just wait until we talk about the dream symbolism in Secret Legacy ;o) I need it in my life. And I need to be out of my home office looking for it, whenever I don’t need to be here for work or family. Because it’s not just the water that drives me. It’s the nature around it. The isolation and belonging of it. The history and the immersion into the present. The travel and the coming home. The reality and dreaming. Water brings all those things to me.

Shoes Are My Heroine–Blue Suede

Monday, June 21st, 2010

Shoe Project: As obsessed as I am with writing, dreams, my teenager, waterfalls and the things that speak to me these days of family and energy and creativity…another abiding force in my adult life is my love of the pretty things that you get to wear an carry around with you all day.

I’ve talked bloggish about purses for years. My feet have often felt like forgotten step sisters. And that’s no way to foster peace and harmony in a closet as crowded as mine. So, with my new-found need for blogging to be a playful, creative place, my gams are now getting their weekly due in my Shoe Project.

I’m a little excited (and mildly embarrassed) at how many, many, weeks this will take. Hope you decide to settle in and join in the fun ;o)

Things My Teenager Says–hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

Don’t talk about your kids on the Internet. That’s been a hard and fast rule for me and many other writers I know. But sharing how inspiring and downright hilarious living with a teenage boy can be… Now that’s another story. One I’ve decided to devote considerable blog time to telling.

“Mom, do you have a favorite word?” He’s already smiling, so I know there’s a catch.

There’s always a catch with teenagers newly sprung for summer vacation.
