Head’s-Down Writing Days

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

When you’re a tech writer, you learn you have to have head’s-down writing days. Whether you’re in a busy office or working at home and everyone’s pinging you on your laptop through your DSL or whatever and the phone won’t stop ringing, you have to learn how to tell everyone that you can’t chat today, or do lunch, or even make a hour-long meeting that should only take fifteen minutes. You have a certain number of pages to get done to stay on your project plan, and that’s just the way it’s going  to be. You’re not moving from your desk or even going to try and pretend to be social until they’re done.

Fiction writers need head’s-down days, too. I was talking with someone yesterday about meeting daily page count goals. If I could do it writing 600 pg. security administration guides (brain damge would be a more interesting pursuit), I can damn well do it writing something fun like how to make dreams leathal or how to kill a bad guy with a Yoo-hoo-spewing vending machine (don’t ask). Your daily fiction writing goal is your professional project. If you have to, make a formal plan to track it. Then follow the plan. Even if you think you can’t be creative today. Of course you can be creative. You’re a creative writer. It’s you job. DO IT.

Sorry for yelling. Not enough Yoohoo yet today. (more…)

lavendar-hanging-21

The coutour Dream Flutters pieces were custom-designed from my friend Marci’s new line of eco-friendly product Tagua Nut creations. This “vegetable ivory” is a renewable and sustainable product, and helps support the employment of nearly 35,000 people in the rainforests. I couldn’t help but get excited by the possibilities—and now Marci’s inspiration is has resulted in my own line of  Dream Flutters jewelry!

Th lavendar pendant (hand carved from Tagua Nut and stained to match one of the central colors in my Dark Legacy cover), spotlights the raven and tree imagery from the novel. Hanging from a black silk cord and accented by solid gold fastenings, this necklace is finished with enamel and cloisonné charms at the clasp. It’s a truly breathtaking piece .

Leave comments. Enjoy the blog. Win, win win!!!! I’ll be giving away a Tagua Nut Dream Flutters necklace very month through Dark Legacy’s August 25th/September release!

You Dream for You… Indulge Yourself…

dreamsThe last few days, I’ve been writing an article on Dream Theory and my September Dark Legacy release, for Romantic Times magazine.I went back and reread my notebooks (yes, notebookS) and the small library of dream research I bought and studied while I pieced together the early plot. A lot of reflection ensued. And I found myself getting excited all over again by the science of dream theory and the possibilities that dreams offer our every day lives. Yes, my imagination has taken the concept of dream work and run with it to create a suspenseful paranormal world for my new series. But under all the craziness I’ve stirred up, I still see the great stuff you and I can learn about our dreams and our waking lives–as long as we’re willing to indulge our dreams and go along for the ride(more…)
