Eye on the Finish Line…

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

Everyone knows publishing is a tough nut to crack, never more so than in today’s tight markets. And everyone knows it takes a lot of hard work to get a manuscript contracted. That there will be some tough breaks to weather before it’s your turn to shine.

But what if you’re already working hard, and you have been for a while? What if you’ve learned a lot, and you’re producing good work, and your fellow writers love your stories and keep telling you your soooooo close? Yet the rejection letters keep coming. Maybe an editor or agent even likes your voice, they think you have a bright future ahead–but this or that story just isn’t right for them. Good luck with your career. So sorry wecouldn’t pick you up this time, but keep at it.

Keep at it? You’re exhausted, you’ve been at it for so long. What’s the point, you might be asking, if there’s no guarantee–no formula to follow to earn what many who started before and after you have achieved? In the end, is it finally going to be worth it? Or will you still be stumbling around years from now, no closer to your victory than ever?

If you’ve been asking yourself these questions, let me offer a bit of a reality check. (more…)

New Dark Legacy Excerpt! Dreams and Nightmares…

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

There’ve been so many requests for a taste of how I’ve worked dream theory into Dark Legacy. I don’t want to disappoint my blog faithful. But at the same time I can’t give way the opening few scenes of the  book–where the dream theory is set up for the reader. A pre-release quandry… What do to…

A compromise seems in order, so–here is a piece of a key scene between Maddie and Jarred (both of whom you’ve met in previous excerpts, so scroll back in the Dark Legacy category if this is your first taste and read those first). Sarah, Maddie’s not-so-sane twin, is also there…sort of… You’ll see what I mean.

It’s a great showcase for how Dark Legacy weaves the sister’s dreams/daydreams together, sometimes in frightening ways.

This is not at all a complete look at the various ways you’ll see dreams propel Dark Legacy’s plot forward. They’re so integral to the story, I can’t really explain more without spoiling a lot of the ride–and you KNOW I’m not going to do that. But I’m very pleased with how this snippet turned out.

Hope you will be, too. Enjoy!!!

Dark Legacy
Somewhere in Chapter Ten
—————————————

“…You didn’t just see what happened when Sarah began to lose herself,” Jarred pressed. He couldn’t believe he was entertaining such an outlandish explanation. But somehow he knew he was right. “You…felt what happened to your twin, didn’t you? Like you felt that patient’s injuries this morning.”

Maddie’s fingers slid from his arms. Her body fell slack as she withdrew into that mind he wanted—needed—to understand. (more…)

Being still…

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

I saw Money’s Water Lilies this week.Every time I’m in a museum, I could just sit for hours and absorb the art around me. I’ve wanted to live in a museum, ever since I was eight and read, “From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs.Basil E. Frankweiler.”

Funny that this trip was to see some of the last works of an artist who spent his twilight years sitting and taking in the world and then stuggling to find a way to bring what he saw to life on canvas, so the rest of us wouldn’t miss it.

As a writer/artist, I always find Monet an inspiration. And as a human being, I find his journey to produce his Water Lilies a challenge–to have a point of view and to find a way to express it, no matter what others might think.

Monet’s Water Lilies were considered a failure at the time of his death in the 20s. No one understood them. It wasn’t until the 50s focus on “modern” art that these then 30-year-old canvases became wildly popular.

Your Dreams and What You Believe…

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

I fell in love with the idea of creating an exciting paranormal series based on things that are there, but not quite there. I’m fascinated by those parts of our lives that I think we’d see, if we’d let ourselves believe in what we can’t quite see. Dreams were a natural place to start–so dream theory became the basis for my August 25th release, Dark Legacy, and it sequel (Secret Legacy, due on shelves June ‘10).

And I’m so in love with everything I’ve learned about dream theory, I can’t wait for Dark Legacy to launch before I share a bit of it with you ;o) Check back each week for more fun dream reveals and discussions!

Today’s topic–How does what you believe affect your dreams, and how do your dreams affect what YOU believe? (more…)

Work Hard at Being a Dreamer

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

I’m posting weekly about the dream theory I’ve incorporated into Dark Legacy (more fun dream science tidbits later this week, plus a new excerpt from a Dark Legacy dream sequence!). But today I want to zero in on  the realization that started my fascination with dreams–my belief that our dreams and how we deal with them defines the success we invite into our lives.

My Dark Legacy posts illustrate the cool ways my imagination fantasizes about dreams. On the othe hand, I’d like to think my life is an example of how to let your dreams lead, even when (especially when) they seem unattainable. Not that following your heart is always a sure-fire path to success. But owning your dreams is key, whether they ever come true or not. Dreams should be your motivation, just as much as the day-to-day practicalities of life. Your dreams are part of who you are–an important part that the world needs to see, so other people can understand you. YOU need to see them. Dreams are the most important motivators to success you’ll ever have. (more…)

Thirteen Summers

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

A friend once told me that my job from the moment my baby was born was to prepare him to be able to leave me. My role was to make sure he could thrive and succeed and feel nothing but excitement when it was time to strike out on his own. Well, my baby’s thirteen now, and the reality of that sage prediction is hitting home.

Sure, I’ve cried at his Christening and at a few birthdays and at the kindergarten holiday play and graduation. I’ve celebrated when he won awards and took chances–both the chances that were rewarded with success and those that became chaotic learning experiences. He’s spent summer weeks at Camp Grandma and long weekends with other friends or family when my husband and I needed to get away.  And I’ve travelled for business off and on ever since he was a todler. But nothing’s prepared me for packing man-sized clothes in a man-sized suitcase so my “baby” could go study advanced mathmatics on a college campus for THREE WEEKS ON HIS OWN!!! (more…)

Dark Legacy Excerpt–Time to Meet Jarred Keith!

Friday, June 12th, 2009

Okay, okay okay! Stop nagging me ;o)

I’m glad you love Maddie Temple. And I get it. You wanna taste of her hero, too… Thanks for the excited emails and blog comments. Those of you who want to see some the dreams I keep talking about, hang on for just one more week. Until then…

Heeeeere’s Jared!

This scene immediately follows the last excerpt I posted, so scroll back in the Dark Legacy category if you haven’t read that yet. This isn’t the beginning of the book (can’t give that away), but it’s an important get-to-know Jarred scene. And the lovely thing is how much more you get to know Maddie, too ;o) And then there’s Sarah, the psychotic, psychic twin whose nightmares are haunting Maddie, even during the day…

Dark Legacy
on shelvels August 25th!

There’s something you’re not telling me.” Jarred was staring at Maddie from his expensive chair, behind his expensive desk. Maddie stared back, swallowing the instinct to trust him. To invite him deeper into her messed up life. Into her mind. (more…)

Succeed through your worry…

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

Authors worry. A lot. About what they’re writing. About what they’re not writing. About what they’ve just written and whether or not it will sell. Will they ever sell? Will they ever write anything they think is good enough to even submit???

Sometimes the worry helps motivate us. Sometimes, it keeps us from moving forward. And sometimes, when it gets really bad, worry becomes the reason we say we have to quit this way of life. We just can’t take it anymore. Those are the times I hope you remember this: How much we worry about whether our dreams will come true, is directly proportional to how important those dreams are to us. (more…)

Dream Logic…

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

I’ve had a lot of questions about how the dream theory in Dark Legacy works, and that’s going to be tough to explain until everyone has their copy. I don’t want to give too much away. But, it’ll be fun until then talking about the real-world dream theories I researched and based my Dark Legacy world on.

To wit–Dream Logic. To make Dark Legacy (and it’s sequel) work, there had to be a way to define dreams and also to intentionally alter their logic through psychic projection via the collective unconsciousness. See–you really have to read the book for that to all make sense. But before you do, we can talk a little about how dreams really do find their meanings and how you might be able to get a closer look at what’s going on while you sleep.

Get Busy Supporting Others…

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

I wanted to spend this post exploring a very, “I’m okay, you’re okay,” notion that has forever changed my perspective on the world of publishing. So here it is, the thought of the day: If you want personal success, if you want to master how you react to this industry’s ups and downs, you have to get busy supporting others.

I’m not talking about the kind of support you give an organization or just your close, personal buddies. This is something deeper. A personal choice. Your mind-set, if you will, as you look at the world around you. How do you feel when someone else wins the prize you really wanted to win, snags the publishing contract you’d kill for, or scores the literary agent to end all agents? How does this affect your energy, your perspective of the industry, and your confidence in your own work? (more…)
